So moral of the story- if you have the 10.10.5 installer, use that. Then re-erased the disk (quick erase) and reinstall the OS. We fixed disk permissions and verified the disk (disk was fine, it was all a software issue). After 2 hours of it loading and only getting halfway we quit that and they had me boot in repair mode. Tech support had me boot in terminal mode, deleting the cache and plists.

I called tech support and they walked me through the process of fixing the problem (for free). Research showed that other people with computers from the same era as mine (including MBPs) had similar problems. Hence, holding down the keys when booting didn't register anything.Īlso, the Pioneer Blu-Ray drive that I'd installed in the first optical bay wasn't recognized, though the stock apple drive in the 2nd bay was. I had my keyboard plugged into an aftermarket PCI card, not the native USB ports on the tower. HOWEVER, this was my fault (and won't apply to you). I tried booting in Safe Mode, I tried booting is Repair Mode, I tried booting off my dvd drive. I tried a force quit of the finder, but it didn't show up in the Force Quit window. With all peripherals except the keyboard unplugged, I incrementally upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7 to 10.8- at which time I decided to wipe my boot drive (3x security wipe).Īfter that, I installed 10.9 and then 10.10(.4). I don't know about your MBP, but I just upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.10.5 this weekend on my 2010/11 MacPro… disaster.
